Project: Nairn Academy, Nairn, Morayshire
Client: Britspace for Nairn Academy
Architect: Young & Gault LLP
Services Value: £300,000
Project Value: £1.5 Million
This project, due to complete in September 2009, is to provide a new extension to the existing Nairn Academy, a six-year comprehensive school which was founded in 1832. The school serves the burgh and former county of Nairn and has a roll of approximately 800 pupils.
The present school building was designed to be as flexible as possible to cope with change. The building is largely single-storey, and, in addition to normal classrooms, there are open-plan areas. An extension was opened in August 1993 which provides specialized accommodation, including toilet facilities for pupils with physical handicaps, a physiotherapy suite and teaching areas for pupils with severe or profound learning difficulties.
The new two-storey extension will provide much needed accommodation for the school and will principally comprise teaching space. Being built of a modular construction, it will provide the client with significant cost savings over traditional construction methods and will also facilitate a reduction of 6 months to the construction programme, to enable the facility to be open in time for the new school year, starting September 2009. Higher quality build standards are also achieved through the factory based modular method of construction to be employed.
Silcock Dawson has been appointed, by clients Britspace, to provide full design and site supervision duties. The Company's responsibilities will encompass the design requirements for both the factory element of the project and the site requirements, plus site supervision duties.
