Project: Clifton Suspension Bridge
Client: Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust Contract Admin.
Winner of the Transport category in the Lighting Design Awards. Silcock Dawson & Partners were employed to complete the Electrical Engineering and Contract Administration.
The Clifton Suspension Bridge is a Grade 1 listed structure spanning 245ft above the Avon Gorge. The bridge is located in a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and crosses the boundary between North Somerset and Bristol City Council.
Due to severe working and weather conditions, the Bridge can only be accessed during the summer months. Consequently, the project was undertaken in two phases. Phase one constituted the removal of the existing illuminations and upgrade of the electrical distribution network; this was successfully completed during the summer of 2004.
Several lighting demonstrations were undertaken during the winter of 2004 to finalise luminaire and selections to the bridge chains. LED lighting projectors were finally selected as these outperformed the original fibre optic proposal. The illuminations for phase two were completed in November 2005.
